Musical A-ha Moment

Each day, we probably hear upwards of twenty songs a day. Be it a music clip from a movie, a jingle from a commercial, or the cashier's favourite burnt CD playing at the Gap. If you add this all up, we probably hear at least 10, 000 songs in a given year. And this number increases exponentially if we include all the music we listen to for pleasure on our radio, iPod, or iTunes library.

But amongst all this melodic mania, there are always a few songs that we hear that seem to stick with us forever. Maybe we remember them because it was the soundtrack to our first kiss. Or our first break-up. Or maybe it was your first dance as a wife (or a husband).

But there are also songs we remember for less obvious reasons.

For the life of me I do not know why 'Fast Car' by Tracy Chapman has followed me throughout my thirty years (actually, less than that since I only heard the song when I was like, fifteen. But thirty sounds more dramatic - let's stick with that). Or why 'Anytime' by Brian McKnight turns me into a pile of mush every time I hear it. Sure, Brian is one of my all-time favourite artists but he has written tons of amazing songs - why does 'Anytime' stick out?

Just recently, I have added another song to my repertoire of unforgettable songs. When I first heard this song, it actually took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting to get the reaction to it that I did. It's like I was hearing the exact song at the exact moment that I should be hearing it. Musical destiny, perhaps? Lyrically, the song didn't have a whole lot of pertinence in my life but perhaps it was the way the lyrics were delivered. Or the sound of the melody. I know this is going to sound corny and I will probably regret typing it as soon as I click 'publish' but I'll type it anyway because behind all the corniness is a grain of wisdom, I think. It was like if my soul could sing or hum, it would have sang or hummed this song at the exact moment I heard it.

Told you it was corny.

Anyways, I am building up anticipation for a song that in all likelihood, means way more to me than it will to you. Sorry. Well, the song I heard was 'Man in the Mirror'. That Michael Jackson song? you're probably thinking. Yes, that's right. I know, I know. I've heard this song many times before but it didn't mean much to me until I heard it sung by James Morrison. After hearing this cover by Mr. Morrison, I finally got the song. Holy cow. What an amazing song. This song is genius and James Morrison is a genius for singing it the way he did.

Well, that's enough of my word vomit. Here, listen to it below:

So, that's it. The music of my soul : ) One of the songs that will stick with me for the rest of my life because I heard it at the exact moment that my soul wanted to sing it. Or hum it. Or... no, not whistle it. I don't even think my soul can do that.

(Besides Jingle Bells, right Mike?)
