Signs

I've always been a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. That those little, seemingly insignificant coincidences that happen in our day-to-day lives actually mean something in the grand scheme of things. I'm sure we've all had those days where we feel lost and helpless and all we need is a sign from somewhere that everything is going to be okay - or not okay, which sometimes might be the case. We just want to know what the heck is going on and why. And when you feel like you can't feel any more lost, you get little signs. Like little nudges from God trying to point you in the right direction. Like the gospel reading at church the next day that seems to fit exactly what you're going through. Or the church hymn that sings to you like an answer to a prayer. Or that little brown bunny that seems to have made a permanent residence on your front lawn. Or even the little baby at Starbucks who won't stop staring and smiling at you like he's in on God's little secret for you.

Now, the trouble with all these little signs is the interpretation of them. What do they really mean? We can easily make it mean what we want them to mean, but maybe that's not what they really mean. You see the dilemma, here?

Nonetheless, I guess you can only take these signs as they come and hope that your interpretation of them will lead you where you want to be.

So here's the latest sign. Matt Giraud, my current favourite on this season's American Idol, sang a Carrie Underwood song called 'So Small'. I never really paid much attention to this song before, but since Matt sang it I felt compelled to look up the lyrics. And thank goodness he sang this song because at the moment, these lyrics are the perfect 'sign' for me today:

It's so easy to get lost inside
A problem that seems so big at the time
It's like a river that's so wide
It swallows you whole

While you're sitting around thinking 'bout what you can't change
And worrying about all the wrong things
Time's flying by, moving so fast
You better make it count 'cause you can't get it back

Sometimes that mountain you've been climbing
Is just a grain of sand
And what you've been out there searching for forever
Is in your hands

Oh, and when you figure out
Love is all that matters after all
It sure makes everything else
Seem so small...
