Still My Idol

I can't believe I'm getting sucked into American Idol again. After the blatant attempt to sabotage David Archuleta last year by denying him song choices, preventing him from changing musical arrangements, feeding into the 'stage dad' controversy, etc. I told myself I would never set my eyes on that show again. But here I am, every Tuesday and Wednesday between 8 and 9 p.m. watching the best and worst of America's singers.

As much as I hate to admit it, some of the male singers are actually quite good. I especially like that Anoop guy, Matt Giraud, and those two friends (Gokey and somebody). As I was watching these male singers, I couldn't help but ask myself: "Could these guys actually be as good as David Archuleta? Is that possible?" Such blasphemy, I know. What kind of David fan am I?

So after the show, I went on youtube to watch one of my favourite David performances from tour - "When You Say You Love Me", just to see how he compares. And oh. my. gosh. He does not compare. What was I thinking? I literally get a physical, visceral reaction when he sings this song. Chills down my spine, the whole she-bang. I feel like weeping every time I hear this. I still can't put my finger on what it is that makes him SO good. Something about how he is so PRESENT in the song. He literally means and feels every single word he is singing and anyone watching him GETS that. He connects with the audience so well. And the VOICE. My goodness.

See for yourself. I hope you see what I mean. Watch David perform "When You Say You Love Me" below:

So what you do think? Did you listen until the end? That note at 3:49 gets me every time. Wow.
