History is Made

Today, history was made. Today, millions of people around the world took a moment out of their everyday lives to witness an historical event - the inauguration of the first African-American president of the United States. I can't help but get misty-eyed at the enormity of this event. Yesterday, I read a book to my students about Martin Luther King Jr. We talked about the segregation that went on less than 60 years ago. How black people weren't allowed into certain stores and restaurants. How Rosa Parks got arrested just because she wouldn't give up her seat on a bus. How Martin Luther King Jr. fought his fight with peace and love, not fists and guns. How far we've come. A man who sixty years ago wouldn't have been allowed to ride on a bus, is now the most powerful person in the world.
Where were you when Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States? I'll never forget being crammed into the school gymnasium with fellow teachers and students, watching the live feed of the event through the Global T.V. website, enlarged on the big screen. The students clapping and cheering, probably not fully realizing the enormity of the event. But that's okay. Hopefully they'll remember where they were when history was made.
