History in the Making

Anyone close to me will attest to my undying devotion (or as others like to put it - obsession) to David Archuleta.  I really want to write the perfect blog to explain why I find David to be the best thing to hit the music scene (and the planet) in a long time, but that time is not now.  I am still trying to find the right words to properly convey my feelings and until I find them, I will keep silent on the subject.

BUT, I would be remiss if I did not mention the significance today holds in Archuleta-land.  And to those of you who reside outside this awesome place, let me explain to you what I am talking about.  David released his first single 'Crush' for digital purchase on Tues. Aug. 12, 2008.  Eighteen hours upon being unleashed upon the world, David's single reached #1 on the U.S. iTunes chart.  Five days later (today) 'Crush' is still sitting comfortably at #1.  This is an incredible achievement in itself, given that this song hasn't even been released for official radio airplay yet.  Despite it's limited airplay, 'Crush' is still #1 at many top radio stations - not only in the U.S. of A. but also around the WORLD (Malaysia, for example).

Hold on to your hats, folks - I'm getting to the best part.  It has been leaked by a reliable source that David's first single is VERY close to landing the #1 spot on the Hot 100 Billboard chart.  #1!  No other American Idol contestant has EVER occupied a #1 spot on this chart with a song from their own album.  Better yet, I can't even think of any other NEW artist in the HISTORY of music that has DEBUTED at #1 with their very first, brand spanking new single.

So what does this have to do with today, you ask?  Well, today is the last day that radio airplay, digital sales, and live streaming will count towards the #'s for next week's chart.  There is actually a MOVEMENT going on in cyberspace campaigning to get David that coveted #1 spot. People are actually offering to buy David's single to complete strangers.  Strangers are coming together because of this awesome individual.  Those who 'get' who David is have a deep and vested interest in him and want him to succeed so badly.  I believe that it isn't really about the song 'Crush' itself.  Although it is a great song, this desire transcends the song.  To his die-hard fans (present company included), we want to see this self-proclaimed 'Billboard Charts Geek' stare at his own name sitting atop the most important music chart in the world.  To flip through the charts that he has been obsessed with for so many years and find that he is now a part of music history.  It is the least we can do for a person who has already affected the lives of so many.

So please become a part of history and buy his single on iTunes.  It will be the best 99 cents you will ever spend!  And if you are still reluctant to do that, at least give David a chance and open yourself up to all he has to offer the world.
